Fred Thompson
January 2nd, 2008 by Republican By DefaultConsider this a formal endorsement for Fred Thompson for President in 2008.
The reasons that I’m endorsing Fred are simple:
- He’s established himself and proven himself as a conservative.
- He’s the only statesman in the race.
- He’s behaving himself like a grown-up.
- He has more foreign policy experience than anyone else (with the possible exception of McCain, which is based mainly on his military service, who isn’t really a conservative.)
- His ‘negatives’, when fully understood, are not of major concern to me.

Just an update, Fred finished in what I believe to be a respectable 3rd (or near tie for 3rd). Considering his late entry and the number of misrepresentations in the press (including a last minute surprise by politico.com saying that if he doesn’t finish ‘a strong 3rd’ in the Iowa caucuses), I’d say 13% is pretty good.
But I’m also guessing this is going to a bumpy ride getting started.

I heard Fred, in an interview, say that the rumor about him dropping out after Iowa probably cost him 2-3 percentage points. That doesn’t surprise me and based on my limited experience, I would say he’s probably right.
Both liberal and (relatively) conservative news and talk shows are ingoring Fred for the most part. It seems that they only really talk about him when they have something bad to say about him, which seems to be very seldom (unless they make something up.)
The media’s treatment (or lack thereof) of his candidacy will only be overcome by a grassroots support that forces them to take notice.

I liked Fred a lot, and thought him to be an honorable and honest candidate. However, early in the campaign he did not show enough passion and dedication to differentiate himself from the other republicans. It seemed as though he was just going through the motions and had more important things to do. Finally towards the end the “fire in the belly” was there, but it was too late to make a come back.
I was supporting Romney up until he proved himself a panderer who would say whatever he thought people wanted to hear. McCain is not my first of second choice, but he’s much better than Clinton or Obama.
