USA Today blames Conservative Christians…
April 13th, 2008 by Republican By DefaultIn an opinion piece in USA Today the writer blames the Republican Party’s association with conservative Christians (one of the main reasons) for the GOP losing young voters. And, of course, liberal Republicans buy the lie.
It’s beginning to sound like a broken record. Oh, I’m sorry, the ‘youth’ won’t know what a record is.
Remember that this is an opinion piece, not a study or a survey. And it’s posted on a liberal, dead-tree rag’s Web site as they try to reach a younger crowd that never had ink-stained fingers from trying to understand the world around them.
What are the other reasons given in the piece?
Young people react to the success or failure of the first politicians they know. The twentysomethings of the 1980s, for example, associated the Democratic Party with the malaise of Jimmy Carter — and the GOP with the triumphs of Ronald Reagan.
Apparently, the writer thinks that ‘young people’ are too stupid to think for themselves. They’re just dumb animals with limited higher brain functions. All they can do is follow their first emotional reaction.
The Reagan years were a time of prosperity for young workers. Unemployment plunged, wages rose, housing became more affordable. The Bush years have not been so favorable.
Right! It’s all Bush’s fault. The fact is the Bush economy has been doing well since 2003, which is when it really recovered from the 9/11 attacks.
Today’s twentysomethings are browner and blacker than those of the 1980s.
How convenient. The race card.
So what should the GOP do about it? Be more like Democrats, of course.
Present a sunnier face on social issues.
A green discussion
* Re-emphasize the environment.
The voting data suggest that young voters might care less about the environment in reality than they think or say they do. Nevertheless, environmental concern is the price of admission to any kind of discussion with the young. [emphasis added]
On abortion, too, it is important that Americans understand that the end of Roe v. Wade does not mean a national abortion ban. Ending Roe means that individual states recover the power to make their own decisions on abortion. We as Republicans need to make it very clear: If California and New York vote to retain abortion rights after Roe, national Republicans won’t interfere.
Because kids are stupid. It doesn’t matter if you lie to them as long as it sounds good. And since what kids really want is the Democrat party, we should just abandon what it is to be Republican and the kids will come rushing back. (In case you missed it, that’s sarcasm.)
* Above all, results matter.
Finally, a comment that makes sense. Results do matter, especially to young people. They can think. They see what people do and they see the results. Give them enough time and they’ll see right through the lies.
I can think of a much better way to attract young voters. Be straight with them. Give them facts to consider. Realize that they’re probably sick and tired of the hearing opinions without any basis in the reality they’ve experienced.
But also realize that their experience includes a public education. Our schools are not just an education system anymore. They’re an indoctrination program. During the time in their life that kids trusted what they were told they were spoon-fed liberal ideas and shielded from anything that contradicted them. Now they have the ability to think for themselves.
Give them the information they need to make an informed choice. Don’t pressure them. Don’t try to trick them. Don’t try to market anything to them. Let them see the facts and they’ll figure it out for themselves.
But don’t expect them to completely agree with you after they’ve sorted it all out. In addition to having the ability to think, they also have their own values.
On that note, I have a feeling that, as our current generation of heroes are returning from the war (it’s all the same war), young people will again be exposed to the values of patriotism, true democracy and the price of freedom. That’s a piece of reality that they haven’t yet experienced and it’s the other side of the story that they were told by liberal teachers. They’ll figure it out.
By the way, the link to a young Republicans Web site above isn’t quite what it seems. It’s a site sponsored by the King County GOP (Seattle, WA). It’s not a site created by young voters for young voters, it’s an extension of the liberal KCGOP. You’ll hear more about them on this site as the campaign season wears on. (Hint: they’re part of the reason for my handle).

The Republican party needs to come to the realization that they are never going to get a majority, or even a plurality of the young vote. It’s just not gonna happen. Most young people(not all, but most) are influenced by the lead singer of their favorite band, a Hollywood star, or god forbid, Puff Daddy. Its just simpler and easier to be liberal when you’re younger. Churchill said it best; “if you’re not liberal when you’re young, you dont have a heart. If you’re not conservative when you’re old, you dont have a brain.”
