Tacoma - March 15th: An inch of global warming on the ground

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

For those of you who refuse to question popular theories of anthropogenic (man-made) global warming, maybe you should reconsider.  I’m not asking anyone to accept my view without question, I’m asking you to question both sides of the issue.  If you’re a liberal who claims to be open-minded that should be no problem for you.

I’m certainly not the only one questioning the issue, nor are conservatives the only ones.  It seems that top scientists in Japan are questioning the man-made aspect of global warming.  They question the data used to come to those conclusions and they challenge the climate modeling theories that global warming alarmism is based on.

I’m not used to seeing snow on the ground in mid-March in Tacoma.  All across the country record low temperatures have been set this year.  How is that consistent with the idea of man-made global warming?  Have we solved the problem and this is the result? And if we’ve solved it then we can stop spending tax dollars on it, right?

Another legislative attack on religion; Update: Bill dies due to ethical questions

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Liberals in the Washington State legislature are once again attacking the free practice of religion.  Bills introduced in the House and Senate by some of the most liberal Democrats in this state’s congress would put employers in further jeopardy of frivolous lawsuits by disgruntled employees and former employees.  In addition it furthers the business-unfriendly climate that exists here in Washington State.

I’m guessing that this is payback for the trial lawyers who supported them in their campaigns.

Aside from opening the door to violating the free exercise clause of the US Constitution, this bill has a broad and nebulous definition of what constitutes a violation.

NEW SECTION. Sec. 2. (1) An employer may not require an employee to attend a meeting, or listen to, or respond to, or participate in,  any other communication when a purpose of the requirement is to ensure that employees receive communications relating to political or religious matters or to influence the employee’s beliefs, opinions, or actions about political or religious matters.

(2) An employer may not take or threaten to take an adverse employment action against an employee because the employee:

(a) Refuses to attend a meeting or listen or otherwise respond to, or participate in, any other communication that the employee reasonably believes violates or would violate this section;
(b) Challenges or opposes any practice or action that the employee reasonably believes violates or would violate this section; or
(c) Makes a claim, files suit, testifies, assists, or participates in any manner in any investigation, proceeding, or hearing involving any practice or action that the employee reasonably believes violates or would violate this section.

The fact is proselytizing, or evangelism, is a basic tenet of most Christian religions.  Preventing anyone, no matter where they are or what they’re doing, from engaging in those efforts violates the free exercise clause.  This law would likely hold the employer responsible any such efforts by any employee for simply allowing the free exercise of religion by any employee. Let me put it another way.  If an employer allowed one employee to talk about his religion in the workplace another employee could claim that he was therefore forced to listen to it.

And you can kiss the company Christmas party goodbye.  And forget about businesses partnering with religious charities to benefit the needy in our communities.

Makes me wonder what these people are so afraid of.  Why does religion, especially Christianity, frighten these people so much that they make every possible attempt to squelch it?  Talk about frightened and clingy.

Here’s how I think they should change this bill:

  • Remove any reference to religion, since it’s covered in the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which this law violates;
  • Leave in all of the stuff about politics;
  • Include labor unions everywhere that employers are mentioned.

This way some of the Republicans in the Puget Sound area who fear for their jobs just for mentioning their political affiliations will have some recourse and maybe some union members will feel free to vote their conscious instead of having to risk their paycheck and their safety.

Think that will ever happen?

Discrimination against Christians in TNT

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

The Tacoma News Tribune has a one-sided article about the Bush Administration’s decision to give a $1.5 million grant to Federal Way based World Vision to help fund it’s anti-gang program.

The article makes no effort to provide any type of balance. It would have been very simple to provide a link to the actual decision on the Justice Department Web site, but they didn’t even do that. They simply quoted a heavily biased article from the leftist New York Times News Service

Maybe a quote of the constitution would help understand the issue:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

So, a) this does not ‘respect an establishment of religion’ since World Vision itself is not a religion but rather hires people of faith from numerous churches, denominations and groups; and b) withholding money from or requiring them to change their hiring practices would infringe upon their freedom to individually practice their religion.

This money goes to kids, not the establishment of a religion.

Oprah - Not the equal-opportunity exploiter I thought she was

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Amazing. Oprah created the empty suit’s popularity but now doesn’t want her show to be political. She created the liberal obsession over Barry, but when the first woman GOP candidate for VP comes along she wants nothing to do with her. I guess her political bias trumps her support for women.

I’m not an Oprah fan. I think she’s bad for this country. She might do some good for some people but she also has done a lot of harm to a lot of people by making them feel ‘empowered’ about being a victim. As a Christian minister I’m all for people rising to their full potential, but not on the backs others who don’t deserve to be trampled.

I used to view Oprah as an equal opportunity exploiter. She will exploit anyone who makes themselves available to her. She has been behind some of the worst garbage to hit the airwaves in daytime TV.

The Obamessiah Complex

Friday, August 15th, 2008

I guess someone had to say it. But it wasn’t those dastardly Evangelicals. It was CNN and a liberal who runs an anti-Christian Web site.

His Web site, beliefnet.com, promotes just about any religious belief you can find out there along with a bunch of stuff that doesn’t even qualify as a religion. The site even pretends to include Christianity, but in fact they only include the lamest versions of it, alternatives to it or plain old trash-talk about it.

When you contrast this to the media’s portrayal of Obama, they were the ones who started this issue. I think this blast against “Evangelicals” is just the next step in the progression as they advance their agenda of getting the Democrat nominee elected to office.

While the Obamessiah-Antichrist kerfuffle doesn’t even begin to support the idea that Barack Obama is the antichrist, it does illustrate that the world is once again ripe for just such a scam.

Memorial Day

Monday, May 26th, 2008

I just want to take a moment in grateful remembrance of those who have fallen in defense of our country and our freedom. For those who have loved ones who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep all of us free and safe I hope you know that most Americans share the gratitude and the sorrow for your loss.

They will not be forgotten.

As a Christian minister I am keenly aware that those who have fought and are fighting to defend us are protecting each individual’s freedom to worship as each believes to be right. The freedom that I consider so vital is protected by those who have defended our country in the past and especially by those who are fighting in the War on Terrorism and it’s front lines in Afghanistan and Iraq..

Like enemies of the past our current enemies seek world domination. But what’s unique about these is that they do so in the name of their religion. Their religion seeks to subjugate or destroy all other faiths. I don’t know of a time in our nation’s history when freedom of religion was at greater risk.

While the freedom of religion is especially important to me, I am also grateful for all of the other freedoms that I enjoy.

They don’t speak for me

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

It appears that yet another group of liberals is trying to claim that they speak for conservatives. The Republican party if full of those, from John McCain, as de facto head of the party that’s supposed to represent us (who told us to calm down), to the Western Washington Republican party leaders who call themselves ‘conservatives’ while work against religious conservatives (who usually make or break Republican campaigns).

This latest attempt is from the religious left. A group calling themselves ‘Evangelicals leaders’ is claiming that ‘Evangelicals’ are tired of politics creeping into their faith. This is just plain wrong in so many ways.

Is there hope for her destiny?

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Miley Cyrus, singer and actress known for her role as ‘Hannah Montana’ in the Disney conglomerate, is the most recent victim of the exploitation from the entertainment industry.

The vultures at Vanity Fair sent their sleazy photographer Annie Leibovitz to shoot Miss Cyrus for an upcoming issue. As per usual, Leibovitz tried to get the sleaziest shots she possibly could. The magazine released the photos in their never-ending quest to sell magazines and magazine ads.

Is this the beginning of the end for yet another young pop star? Is she on the same road as Lindsey Lohan and Britney Spears?

It turns out that ‘Miley’ is a nickname given to her by her father, country singer and actor Billy Ray Cyrus. She was born ‘Destiny Hope Cyrus’, a name chosen by her father because of a ‘vision’ he had of his daughter when she was born. He said of the name that “it’s her destiny to bring hope to many…”

Is it now her destiny to bring hope to paparazzi and tabloid magazines?

Liberals should stay away from the Bible; Update: Hillary

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been quoting the Bible. Well not actually quoting. And, well, not actually the Bible.

What she’s been saying is, “The Bible tells us in the Old Testament, ‘To minister to the needs of God’s creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us.’” (More over at MichelleMalkin.com.)

The word ‘minister’ simply means ’serve’, so Nancy is telling us to serve created things. And is it an act of worship? Probably, but not one that is worshiping God. When you worship God, you worship God, not the things He created. But since she was ambiguous about who or what was is being worshiped, maybe she was telling the truth. Maybe she meant ’serving created things is also worshiping created things’.

Hypocrite spoke at Pierce County GOP Convention

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Terry Bergeson, WA State Superintendent of Public Instruction, spoke at the Pierce County GOP Convention on Saturday. Now we find out that she approved an effort to bring children from public schools in 25 counties to see the Dalai Lama. When asked whether she would do the same for the Pope, her response was:

[Essex] PORTER: Would the Superintendent of Public Instruction urge schools to bring kids to the Pope?

[Terry] BERGESON: Well, I probably couldn’t get away with that as the Pope, Essex. But the Dalai Lama is a man of the whole world.

Radio talk show host Dori Monson talked with Bergeson about the issue. Give it a listen. She tries to make a distinction between the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Buddhists, and the Pope, spiritual leader of Roman Catholics. But as she does she describes Dalai Lama’s efforts as religious in nature, bringing our hearts, minds and spirits together to bring more compassion.
